Life of  an Air Force Airman

Karn J. Elder, TSgt, USAF Retired

Viet Nam

I was assigned here in July 1971 to The Communications Squadron.  When I was processing into my unit, I was issued a M16 rifle and a 45 hand gun but no bullets.  I still cannot under-stand what good a gun is without bullets for it.  If we did leave base then we were issued
some ammunition.

This was the barracks I lived in during my stay in Viet Nam.  During the rocket attacks,
we would go from the top floor to the lower floor.  As you can see sand bags all
        around the barracks.

This was the Communications building where I worked.  Being assigned to the Communication Squadron was not to bad, we could make calls home two to three time a week. If someone else needed to call home, for example a cook, I will just say we ate really well.  My job here was routing all incoming and outgoing messages.
